International Day of Non-Violence 2020: Say No to Violence

The International Day of Non-Violence is observed on 2 October, the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, leader of the Indian independence movement and pioneer of the philosophy and strategy of non-violence.

According to General Assembly resolution A/RES/61/271 of 15 June 2007, which established the commemoration, the International Day is an occasion to “disseminate the message of non-violence, including through education and public awareness”. The resolution reaffirms “the universal relevance of the principle of non-violence” and the desire “to secure a culture of peace, tolerance, understanding and non-violence”.

International Day of Older Persons 2020: Do Pandemics Change How We Address Age and Ageing?

Today, 1 October 2020, we celebrate the International Day of Older Persons. The year 2020 marks the 30th Anniversary of the International Day of Older Persons.

This year has also seen an emergence of COVID-19, that has caused upheaval across the world. Considering the higher risks confronted by older persons during the outbreak of pandemics such as COVID-19, policy and programmatic interventions must be targeted towards raising awareness of their special needs. Recognising older people contributions to their own health and the multiple roles they play in the preparedness and response phases of current and future pandemics is also important.

YUVA offered Lunch to 150 Residents of Elderly Care Home in Pamplemousses

On Sunday, 27 September 2020, YUVA offered lunch to around 150 residents of the elderly care home, Saint Jean de Dieu – Hospice & Chapel at Pamplemousses.

The event saw the participation of around 20 volunteers too. YUVANs spent half a day with all those senior citizens who live at the home. After an introductory speech by one of the volunteers of YUVA, veg biryani was served along with soft drinks and water. Thereafter, some indoor activities were organised to bring some smiles on the faces of the elders.

World Tourism Day 2020: Rebuilding tourism in a safe, equitable, climate-friendly way

Tourism has been among the hardest hit of all sectors by the COVID-19 pandemic. No country has been unaffected. Restrictions on travel and a sudden drop in consumer demand have led to an unprecedented fall in international tourism numbers, which in turn have led to economic loss and the loss of jobs.

Women, youth, and workers in the informal economy are the most at risk from tourism sector job losses and business closures due to the pandemic. At the same time, the destinations most reliant on tourism for jobs and economic growth are likely to be the hardest hit.

Furthermore, working in stressful environments makes health workers more prone to errors which can lead to patient harm.
